How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity
The practical citation play for AI search: make your brand retrievable, quotable, and present where ChatGPT and Perplexity already look.

On this page
To get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, you need three things: pages their crawlers can retrieve, passages worth quoting verbatim, and a trust footprint beyond your own domain. Retrievable, quotable, credible. Every tactic in this guide serves one of those three, and you can start on all of them this week.
This is AI search optimization at ground level. Everything runs on tools you already have: your CMS, your robots.txt, a spreadsheet, and one recurring calendar block. Here's each layer, in the order the engines apply them.
How do AI engines pick their sources?
AI engines pick sources in three passes: retrieval, where they search an index and fetch candidate pages; extraction, where they pull the passages that answer the question cleanly; and trust, where corroborated, consistent sources win the citation. You can fail at any pass, and every failure looks identical from the outside: you're simply never named.
The engines behave more alike than different. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode answer queries directly with cited sources. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Claude all cite the web pages behind their answers. And Princeton's GEO research, plus the industry studies that followed it, found the same levers move all of them: cited sources, statistics, and quotable structure measurably raise the odds you get named. So the plan mirrors the machine: get retrieved, get extracted, get trusted.
Make your brand retrievable
Retrievability is the first gate, and it's binary: if crawlers can't fetch your content as plain HTML, nothing else in this guide applies to you. Three checks, in order:
- Open robots.txt on purpose. The crawlers behind AI answers include GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot from OpenAI, ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot from Anthropic, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. Audit which ones your robots.txt blocks, and make each allow or block a decision rather than an accident.
- Server-render everything you want cited. These crawlers mostly don't execute JavaScript. If your page is an empty shell until scripts run, engines index the shell. Load your key pages with JavaScript disabled; whatever survives is your real footprint.
- Ship clean structure. Real heading tags, real lists, real tables. Engines extract structure, and comparison tables and listicle formats get lifted into answers often.
One thing you can skip: llms.txt. Real crawler adoption sits near zero, so an afternoon there is an afternoon taken from rendering and robots.txt, the two things that actually gate you.
Make your pages quotable
A quotable page gives the engine a passage that stands alone inside an answer: complete, specific, and still true with the rest of your site stripped away. Write for that lift.
- Self-contained definitions. Define your key terms in 40-80 words that survive out of context, with the subject named in the sentence instead of hiding behind "it."
- Dated, sourced claims. A number with a date and a source is quotable. "Adoption is exploding" is furniture. Engines measurably favor content with receipts.
- Named entities. Use consistent names for your products, people, and features everywhere they appear. Engines resolve entities, and fuzzy naming splits your identity across variants.
- One brand story. Your site, your LinkedIn page, your directory listings, and your team bios should describe you the same way. Inconsistency reads as noise to a system deciding what you are.
That last check is brand discipline more than engineering. Savra's free Brand Genome audit reads your brand in 90 seconds and shows you how consistently it comes across before the engines decide for you.
Show up where engines already look
Your own site is necessary and insufficient, because AI engines cite review sites, Reddit threads, and third-party comparison posts often, sometimes ahead of the brand's own domain. Engines treat neutral ground as corroboration, so earn your presence there instead of resenting it.
Engines weigh what other people say about you at least as heavily as what you say about yourself.
- Keep review-site profiles claimed, current, and consistent with your site's story.
- Answer real questions in the communities where your buyers ask them. Engines quote useful answers wherever they find them.
- Pitch your way into credible comparison posts and roundups. One honest entry in someone else's listicle beats absence from all of them.
This is PR wearing an SEO badge. Budget for it the way you budget for links.
Measure your citations monthly
You measure AI citations by asking the engines your buyers' questions and logging who gets named. Build a fixed set of fifteen to twenty category questions, run it monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode, and record three things: whether you were cited, which page earned it, and who was cited instead of you.
Watch your server logs alongside the prompts. Visits from GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot confirm retrieval is happening even before citations appear. And when one of your pages starts earning citations, study its shape and make more pages shaped like it. The GEO content checklist is that shape, itemized.
The honest caveat: nobody can guarantee a citation
No tool, agency, or tactic can guarantee that ChatGPT or Perplexity will cite you. Citation is earned repeatedly, engines change their models and retrieval without notice, and a page cited every week this quarter can go quiet next quarter. What you control is probability: open access, quotable structure, visible evidence, third-party presence, and a measurement habit that catches drift early.
That's why this works as an operating rhythm and fails as a one-off project. If you're still weighing how much of your existing program carries over, AEO vs SEO separates what changes from what transfers, and the AI search playbook goes deeper on strategy.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I check whether AI engines can crawl my site?
- Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended, then load your key pages with JavaScript disabled to see what a crawler actually receives. Server logs showing visits from those user agents confirm retrieval is happening.
- Why do AI engines cite review sites instead of my website?
- Engines corroborate before they cite, and third-party sources like review platforms, Reddit threads, and comparison posts read as neutral evidence while brand domains carry an obvious interest. The fix is presence: claimed review profiles, useful community answers, and inclusion in credible roundups.
- How often should I test my brand's AI citations?
- Monthly is the working rhythm. Run a fixed set of fifteen to twenty category questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode, then log whether you were cited, which page earned it, and who was named instead. Engines change often enough that quarterly checks miss real swings.
- Should I just block AI crawlers instead?
- Blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and their peers keeps your content out of AI answers, which protects it from reuse and also removes you from a channel your buyers increasingly ask first. For brands that want demand, open access usually wins. Decide per crawler, deliberately, in robots.txt.
