Every chapter of this playbook exists because a brand sounded like itself on Monday and like a press release by Friday. Voice is an asset with a decay rate. This is the maintenance schedule.

Chapter 1 — Map the voice you actually have

Not the voice in the brand deck: the one in your published work. Read your best-performing pieces and your most recent ones side by side. The gap between them is your drift. The fastest version of this chapter is the 90-second Genome audit, which scores voice, consistency, and channel alignment and flags the exact lines that wander.

Chapter 2 — Encode it as guardrails

A voice you can enforce has rules: words you never use, constructions you always use, a tone range per channel. Write the ban list (start with the corporate tells: delve, leverage, seamless). Require contractions. Name the stance: peer, not vendor. If a rule can't reject a draft, it isn't a rule yet.

Chapter 3 — Enforce it on every channel

Enforcement by review meeting caps your output at the reviewer's calendar. Enforcement by guardrail scales: every draft, on every channel, checked against the genome before it ships. Blog, social, email, ads, chatbot replies — one standard, applied automatically, with humans handling judgment calls instead of pattern-matching.

Chapter 4 — Measure the drift

Voice quality becomes a number you track: overall score, per-channel scores, flagged lines per week. Re-audit monthly. A dropping channel score tells you where a new writer, tool, or agency has entered the workflow before anyone has to notice it the hard way.

Chapter 5 — Scale it past one brand

Agencies and multi-brand teams need the same system per brand with no bleed between them. One genome per brand, switched completely with the account, so client A never inherits client B's vocabulary.
